‘America’s First Family in Eye Care’ is six generations strong in Durant

DURANT, Okla. (KFOR) — Optometrist or ophthalmologist, the equipment looks about the same to the uneducated eye.

We put our trust in people like optometrist Dr. Gregory Clay to see where we can’t.

But look back, even several generations, and there’s been a Clay in the eyes of Oklahomans dating back to 1885, back to when an optometrist from Louisiana came north of the Red River, farm to farm, doing what he could to fix peoples’ vision.

“There were no surgeries, no drops, or medicines,” Gregory Clay said. “All they had to offer was glasses.”

Dr. Allen Clay had two sons who partnered up to form an eye clinic in Durant, OK, in 1920.
